Mere weeks after announcing that Android 3.2 is being deployed to the 7-inch Flyer tablet, HTC could be readying a 4.0 update.
According to HTC-Hub, the hardware maker expects to roll out the Ice Cream Sandwich update during the first quarter of the year. If the rumor proves to be true, this may be one of the fastest back-to-back updates in Android history.
The rumors of a 4.0 update got started when a member of the blog spoke to an online HTC customer service representative about some lingering issues that the 3.2 update brought to the tablet. Not only did Honeycomb completely change the UI of the Flyer, but it also removed much of the customization and user experience that came with it. Launched in early 2011, the device ran a modified version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread that included a tablet-optimized version of Sense UI.
Understandably, the Honeycomb update angered more than a few users, including some who prefered to revert back to the 2.3 build. When asked by HTC-Hub as to how one might go about removing Honeycomb, the customer service rep advised that he may be better served waiting for Android 4.0 instead. And after pushing for a time frame, the agent indicated that it would be here in the first quarter.
It’s worth pointing out that this is far from an official announcement, and we’ve yet to hear from HTC publicly on the matter. It’s entirely possible that the customer service rep doesn’t have all the facts and simply spoke out of turn.
On the other hand, HTC may have received enough complaints over the 3.2 update to speed up development on Ice Cream Sandwich. Should the 4.0 release be readied in the next 1 to 2 months, we could expect to see Sprint’s Evo View 4G receive its own update as well.
