iPhone 5 tipped to have at least 4

Apple’s next iPhone will sport a bigger screen than the iPhone 4S, reports from the Wall Street Journal suggest.

‘People familiar with the matter’ speaking to the Journal reckon that the Cupertino company has ordered a bunch of displays that measure at least four inches on the diagonal.

That would give the much-rumoured iPhone 5 a beefier screen than any of its predecessors. While rival manufacturers have spent the last few years making increasingly massive mobiles, Apple has stuck with the same 3.5-inch display since day one.

The report tips Apple to be working with LG Display and Sharp on crafting the next iPhone, as well as Japan Display, an organisation created by three Japanese companies and the government.

The next iPhone’s only clear rival will be the Samsung Galaxy S3 — a follow-up to the sparklingly popular Galaxy S2 that boasts a palm-expanding 4.8-inch display.

Making an iPhone that big would be a huge jump in size for Apple, but Samsung’s actually put Tim Cook and Co in a tricky spot — if Apple sticks with a 3.5-inch screen its device will continue to look tiny alongside rival mobiles, but if Apple ups the real estate it risks looking like it’s playing catch-up with Samsung.

One reason why Apple could be reluctant to forge a bigger iPhone is it currently makes the only successful tablet on the market. Anyone owning a supersized iPhone could be less inclined to splash out on an iPad, which is pretty much the same gadget but with a honking great screen.

Do you think it’s time for a bigger iPhone? Or is Apple’s most famous toy already the perfect size? Let me know in the comments or on our Facebook wall.
