BlackBerry London BB10 smart phone spied in leaked snaps

RIM’s first phone to arrive running the new BlackBerry 10 operating system has been spied in new leaked photos, showing off a large touchscreen and a curvy design.

Codenamed BlackBerry London, the new pictures of this upcoming mobile come from Italian site BlackBerryItalia, via Pocketnow, and tell us something of what we can expect from RIM’s last-gasp attempt to win back the smart phone crown.

The image lends credibility to another BlackBerry London image that leaked way back in February, suggesting that RIM has had this phone’s design up its suit sleeve for a long time. The London will have an impressively high 768×1,280-pixel resolution, but subsequent touchscreen-only BB10 phones will all have 720×1,280-pixel screens, to help app developers.

BlackBerry 10 is the next BlackBerry operating system and it introduces new features including gestures, a swanky on-screen keyboard and some intriguing camera features. Unfortunately, the software is now well behind schedule following several delays, and is currently due to launch early next year.

The London will be the first phone to sport the new operating system, alongside a Qwerty option dubbed the Nevada. Thanks to a leaked snap of RIM’s 2013 schemes, we know that a 4G version of the PlayBook tablet is due before Christmas this year, and that another — probably larger — ‘Blackforest’ tablet will follow in autumn 2013.

RIM reckons its upcoming software will trounce iOS and Android rivals — a tall order when it’s up against heavyweights like the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3 and Nokia Lumia 920. Can it possibly win? Tell me in the comments or over on our Facebook wall.
