If you own an old-school Razr Maxx and have been gazing longingly at Motorola’s latest creation, the Droid Razr Maxx HD, here’s a tidbit to consider. Its bigger screen and more robust processing comes at a price: a shorter run time.
As I had suspected, the new Droid Razr Maxx HD comes close but can’t quite match the first Maxx’s ridiculously long runtime. On our CNET Labs Video playback battery drain test, which involves looping an HD video file continuously, the original Maxx delivered a marathon showing of 15 hours and 16 minutes. On the same test, the Maxx HD lasted for 14 hours and 53 minutes. I know that’s not a huge delta but it does highlight differences in how each phone is constructed and how individual components likely impact overall longevity.

Both the Droid Razr Maxx and Droid Razr Maxx HD use the same 3,300 mAh capacity battery but the Maxx HD boasts a larger 4.7-inch (1,280×720 pixel) screen and faster 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor compared with the Razr Maxx’s 4.3-inch qHD display and older 1.2GHz Texas Instruments CPU. Of course, battery life of almost 15 hours is fabulous, and the Razr Maxx HD is the second- best smartphone battery performer CNET has ever laid its hands on. That’s quite a feat, but if you’re still on the fence about the Droid Razr Maxx HD’s other attributes, take a look at out full review for more details.
