Apple’s iPhone 5 said to be coming to Virgin Mobile

A question that has been lingering since the launch of the iPhone 5 is where is Virgin Mobile?

Over the summer, Sprint’s prepaid Virgin Mobile unit began offering, the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, but word has been mum on the newest version of Apple’s smartphone. Until today, that is.

According to MacRumors, Apple confirmed that it has readied Virgin-specific CDMA iPhone 5 units. Apparently, Virgin Mobile USA iPhone 5 models will come in both black and white and in 16, 32, and 64 GB. Virgin Mobile has yet to confirm this, however.

Several carriers, including AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, already offer the iPhone 5. Prepaid customers can get the smartphone on Cricket, and a handful of regional carriers are also offering the device. According to MacRumors, there are 16 official iPhone carriers in the U.S. — Virgin Mobile and the regional carrier Alaska Communications are the only companies that don’t yet offer the iPhone 5.

If Virgin were to launch the iPhone 5, the plan would most likely resemble what it offered with the iPhone 4S and 4 in June. The carrier gave prepaid customers its Beyond Talk unlimited data and messaging plans, starting at $35 per month. With this plan there was no contract or fees for activation, but users had to shell out a hefty wad of cash for the device — $550 for the iPhone 4 and $650 for the 4S.

Since Virgin has kept quiet on its possible launch of the iPhone 5, it’s unclear when it would happen. CNET contacted Apple and Virgin Mobile USA for comment. We’ll update the story when we get more information.
