Sony has overtaken RIM, Nokia and the struggling HTC to arrive at third place on the smartphone sales ladder, below Samsung and Apple.
Samsung continues to dominate the smartphone market, commanding 31.3 per cent of sales (up from 22.7 per cent), while Apple is also up, at 14.6 per cent (a slight increase from 13.8 per cent).
But Sony’s third-place celebrations must be tempered a little by the sobering news that its sales actually fell year on year from 5 per cent to 4.8 per cent. Luckily for the Japanese company, RIM, Nokia and HTC fell more.
Nokia all but plummeted, slamming down to a 3.4 per cent share from the Apple-threatening 13.6 per cent that it held in 2011. HTC also saw its slice of the pie carved down from a respectable 10.3 per cent to just 4.6 per cent, while RIM continued its downward descent, dropping from 9.6 per cent to 4.2 per cent.
