Nook Simple Touch e

Barnes & Noble is dropping the price of its Nook Simple Touch e-reader by about $20 starting tomorrow, with a new price tag of $79, the company said today.

Not a full-blown tablet, the Simple Touch relies on a touch screen for flipping e-ink pages, navigating menus, and so on. CNET Reviews gave it four out of five stars and called it a “major advancement” over its predecessor.

As CNET’s Rick Broida noted recently in his Cheapskate blog, though full-feature tablets like Amazon’s Kindle Fire can be had for as low as $160, many people prefer an e-ink screen to one that’s backlit — it’s easier on the eyes and better for outdoor reading. And with just books and other reading matter on the gadget, you can’t be tempted to stray from “War and Peace” for Facebook, Angry Birds, or whatever else.

Walmart was recently selling refurbished models of the Simple Touch for $50, but those seem to be out of stock. Earlier, on Black Friday, B&N sold the device for $60.

The Simple Touch is available at B&N retail stores; B&N College Bookstores; third-party retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Best Buy; and online at www.nook.com.

Correction, 11:45 a.m. PT: This story originally misstated the Simple Touch’s new price. It will be $79.

Barnes & Noble hasn’t officially dropped the price of its $99 Nook Simple Touch e-reader, but you can save $20 until March 18 if you buy it with a MasterCard. The deal is available at all Barnes & Noble’s stores nationwide and online at BN.com and also applies to the Nook Color, which can be had for $149.

The Nook Simple Touch is an e-ink e-reader that competes with Amazon’s Kindle Touch, which starts at $99 for the ad-supported model. Both products have received Editors’ Choice awards from CNET. Amazon sells the standard, non-touch-screen version of the Kindle for $79 (some people prefer that model to the Kindle Touch).

On Black Friday last year, Barnes & Noble had a very limited number of special-edition Nook Touch units available for $79, but this is the first time we’ve seen the product drop to $79.

Barnes & Noble is also offering a free Nook Simple Touch, or $100 off the Nook Color or Nook Tablet 8GB or 16GB models, to customers who buy a new subscription to The New York Times.

Obviously, the e-reader competition is fierce among Amazon and Barnes & Noble and we expect to see more deals like this throughout the year.
