Samsung’s new Galaxy S4 smart phone has been pitted against a variety of pointy implements, seemingly handling the blade-based assault rather well.
The video below comes courtesy of YouTube member Szabolcs Ignacz, who claims to have received the the South Korean company’s new flagship phone via a Samsung program that sends new gadgets to bloggers ahead of their official release.
In the clip, the Galaxy S4’s screen, which employs Corning’s rugged third-generation Gorilla Glass, seems to come off better in a battle with a pen, keys, a set of knives and a handful of coins.
No scratches are visible on the surface of the Galaxy S4, though that doesn’t mean it’s indestructible. It doesn’t look like the S4 is being subjected to an enormous amount of pressure, and the tests don’t take into account the vast number of household or commonplace objects that are vying to take a chunk out of your screen. One commenter says, “Put the phone in your pocket with a bit of sand and see if it doesn’t scratch.”
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a phone’s screen punished in the name of science — last year Nokia boasted that its Lumia 900 could be used to hammer a nail into wood. In 2010, a former colleague of mine managed to thoroughly smash a Sonim XP2’s keyboard performing a similar, er, test.
The Galaxy S4 comes out in the UK on Friday. Rest assured we’ll be putting it through the wringer ourselves, to determine whether it’s worthy of your cash.
