Lumia ‘EOS’ due 11 July, will be 41

Nokia has seemingly set a date for the debut of its long-rumoured ‘EOS’ smart phone, with the Finnish phone-maker inviting press to an event on 11 July.

The invite teases “zoom reinvented”, which certainly tallies with reports that Nokia’s next phone will have a whopping great camera unit. The event kicks off at 11am in New York. That’s 3pm UK time, so be sure to keep your eyes glued to CNET for all the news as it unfolds.

Meanwhile, more photos of the supposed EOS phone have appeared, seemingly confirming rumours that the camera-heavy mobile will indeed sport a 41-megapixel sensor — and may be built from metal, too.

The image above, which appears to have emerged on Chinese microblogging site Weibo and was spied by WMPoweruser, clearly shows a camera unit’s front that reads ’41 megapixel’. Previous images showing the back of the phone had a mysterious ‘XX’ over the megapixel count.

Other photos suggest the EOS — which has leaked already in a plastic guise — could be made from metal instead, or come in two versions. Nokia’s recent Lumia 925 is the first Lumia to deploy a metal construction, so a new aluminium Lumia wouldn’t be a complete surprise.

A great camera phone isn’t just down to how many megapixels it crams onto its sensor — my esteemed colleague Andrew Hoyle has already penned an open letter to Nokia, begging the firm not to stop with camera hardware, and to go the extra mile in terms of photo features, too.
