Apple has sold 100 million of its iPod touch MP3 player since launching the device six years ago, Mashable reports.
But it’s not all beer and skittles over at Apple HQ. iPod sales were down in the last quarter, from 12.7 million to 5.6 million, Apple announced in its last results. Let’s see if the new model of iPod touch can help turn that around.
The original touch launched in 2007, and now accounts for more than half of all iPods sold. Since launching the iPod all the way back in 2001, Apple has sold about 350 million of the blighters.
Apple announced a new touch this week, but it’s not without its cutbacks. There’s no rear-facing camera, so you won’t be able to video in glorious 1080p. It doesn’t have the fabric loop to keep it attached to your wrist, and it only comes in grey, unlike its larger-capacity brethren.
While it only has 16GB of storage, it does still have the nippy A5 processor and 4-inch retina display. And it’ll only set you back £199, which is £50 cheaper than the 32GB model.
It’s not surprising iPod sales are on the wane, seeing as every smart phone doubles as an MP3 player nowadays. But the fact Apple is happy to drop features to bring the price down is interesting. The company has been rumoured to have a cheaper iPhone in the wings for some time now, and the more affordable touch just adds fuel to the fire. Would Apple be happy to lower the specs for a more wallet-friendly iPhone? Or would that harm the brand image?
What do you think? And will you be snapping up this new touch? Or is it a step backwards for Apple? Let me know what you reckon in the comments, or over on our Facebook page.
