Samsung 4K TV getting cheaper with 55

4K is getting closer to becoming something you don’t have to be a Russian oligarch to afford, as Samsung reveals a 55-inch and 65-inch UHD TV.

4K — also known as ultra high definition — is the next generation of eye-meltingly detailed home cinema. It’s also wallet-meltingly expensive, but with these two new models Samsung is joining Sony in bringing UHD into the realms of the vaguely realistic.

The two TVs are smaller — and almost certainly cheaper — than the ludicrously posh 85-inch Samsung S9 Ultra HD TV, available now in Selfridges for a mere £35,000.

Like the ultra-fancy S9, the new models include Micro Dimming Ultimate LED lighting. And to make sure that your expensive new telly doesn’t become obsolete when technology races ahead, the S9 and its smaller siblings can be upgraded after you’ve bought them. Samsung’s Smart Evolution kit lets you replace the built-in Internet-connecting smart TV system, with new processors and firmware.

The new models will make their first appearance in South Korea next month. Samsung has yet to confirm price or release dates for the UK, but we’re guessing prices will be somewhere in the region of Sony’s similary-sized rival 55- and 65-inch models, priced at around £3,300 and also scheduled to arrive in June.
