Nokia Here sat

Nokia is opening up its Here Drive and Here Transit sat-nav and maps apps to all Windows Phone 8 devices, not just Nokia Lumia blowers.

Nokia’s maps, called Here, power various apps for Windows Phone as well as iPhone and iPad, offering voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation and offline maps for when you don’t have any Internet service.

Sat-nag app Here Drive has a tweaked interface and improved local traffic information. The new My Commute feature learns your daily driving habits and serves up recommendations for your regular journeys based on current traffic conditions, so you don’t get unexpectedly held up on your daily slog to work.

Here Drive+ for directions overseas

If you’re travelling a little further afield, you can upgrade your Drive app to Here Drive+, which includes global traffic info. It’s free to newer Nokia phones or costs €15.50 (£13.40) to owners of the Nokia Lumia 720, 520 and 521, and other Windows Phone 8 devices made by Samsung, LG et al in Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain and the US.

In other countries Here Drive+ costs €35 (£30) to anyone with another Windows Phone 8 mobile.

Here Transit for public transport

Here Transit gives you routes and information on public transport in over 700 cities in 50 countries. In the updated app, you can call up previous destinations and save favourite places, or look for bus stops and train stations nearby.

Here Transit is free in Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain and the US, or €2 in Australia, China, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Russia and the UAE.
