The first products off the ranks at Berlin consumer electronics show IFA are from Acer: a 10-inch Iconia tablet and a 6-inch smartphone that can record video in 4K.
The ball has started rolling at consumer electronics trade show IFA, and Acer has started off with a bang by announcing that it’s throwing its hat into the phablet ring with the massive 6-inch Liquid S2 smartphone.
Its 6-inch display comes in at 1920×1080 (338 ppi), and it has two cameras: a 2-megapixel camera on the front, and a rear-facing 13-megapixel camera that, according to Acer, is capable of capturing video in 4K — something the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, yet to be announced, is also rumoured to feature. To handle this, the phone has, in addition to its standard 16GB of on-board storage, support for microSD expansion of up to 128GB.
The Liquid S2 runs Android 4.2.2 on a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, with 2GB of RAM on a 3300mAh battery. It also supports the latest Wi-Fi standard, 802.11ac, and long-term evolution (LTE), and can act as a mobile Wi-Fi router.
The company also announced the Iconia A3, a pretty standard 10-inch tablet that seems a bit anticlimactic in comparison. Running Android 4.2 on a 1.2GHz cortex A7 processor, it seems to be based on entertainment. It boasts a 1280×800 screen resolution and Dolby Digital Plus speakers for music and films.
Other features include a micro-HDMI port, a microSD port and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. It will be available in two versions in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in October: Wi-Fi only for €249 (AU$365) and 3G for €299 (AU$438).
Pricing and availability for the rest of the world has yet to be announced.
