Samsung to gear up smartwatch on September 4, reports say

Samsung will join the growing smartwatch market with a new device slated to debut early next month, according to the folks at Bloomberg.

Citing information from “two people familiar with the matter,” Bloomberg said on Friday that Samsung will reveal the Galaxy Gear on Wednesday, September 4, two days before the IFA trade show opens in Berlin. The watch will reportedly let wearers make phone calls, use the Internet, and work with their e-mail.

The initial Galaxy Gear won’t sport a bendable display, according to one of Bloomberg’s sources. But Samsung is working on a model with a flexible screen. The smartwatch will take the stage on the same day that Samsung reveals its new Galaxy Note 3.

The September 4 launch date had already been reported earlier this week by blog site SamMobile, which said that the Galaxy Gear and the Note 3 would pop up at Samsung’s Unpacked Episode 2 event. Christened with the model number SM-V700, the Gear will also serve as an accessory to Samsung’s Galaxy phones, SamMobile added.

Earlier this month, a trademark filing provided corroboration of Samsung’s intention to produce smart wearable technology.

In response to CNET’s request for comment, a Samsung spokesperson said that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.
