Despite troubles, BlackBerry snagged new jet in July

BlackBerry’s troubles have been getting worse for some time. Still, the company found time to invest in another airplane in July.

According to The Wall Street Journal, which obtained Canadian aircraft-registry records, BlackBerry acquired a 2006 Bombardier Global Express airplane in July to cart its executives around the world. The records didn’t indicate how much BlackBerry paid for the aircraft, but the Journal says that similar aircraft have been purchased for upwards of $29 million.

BlackBerry’s decision to acquire another aircraft came as the company was hemorrhaging cash. On Friday, the BlackBerry maker announced that it will post a $1 billion operating loss for the quarter ended August 31. BlackBerry also plans to cut 40 percent of its workforce.

In a statement to the Journal, a BlackBerry spokesperson said the company’s troubles have prompted it to plan to sell all of its aircraft. The move will be part of a 50 percent cut to its operating costs.
