Fastest finger first — and that means the iPhone. According to new tests, the responsiveness of the iPhone’s screen is twice as fast as an Android phone or Windows Phone.
The Apple iPhone 5 comes out on top of the responsiveness test, with just 55ms betwixt finger meeting touchscreen and the phone doing what you want. The Samsung Galaxy S4, by contrast, takes twice that time.
Android phones tested all took between 110 and 120ms to flash the screen white when tapped, a task so basic that it’s only influenced by the responsiveness of the screen and not affected by the speed of the processor.
Even the now two-generations-old iPhone 4 is faster than any Android phone or Windows Phone device, according to the TouchMark test by Agawi. Results are yet to be recorded for the new iPhone 5S.
Researchers from cloud-streaming platform Agawi created a ‘Touchscope’ using Arduino and other basic components, which places a light sensor over the screen and touch sensor on a glove. The researcher tapped the screen up to 50 times, and each time the delay between tap and reaction –also known as latency — was measured down to the millisecond.
Slow motion cameras capturing 240 frames per second show the difference in response times for different devices. A delay of anywhere above 10ms is noticeable by the naked eye, with 1ms being imperceptible. A delay of 50-100ms is much more visible.
