HTC has plans for a “disruptive” tablet and is “excited” about wearable technology. And the company’s current financial woes? “Not a huge problem”, say the top brass.
“When the tablet comes out it will be something nice and disruptive”, says HTC chairwoman Cher Wang, speaking to the Financial Times.
Stop us if you’ve heard that one before: HTC promised a tablet with “something unique” over a year ago. But whatever form it takes, the fabled slate will be HTC’s first crack at a tablet since the 7-inch Flyer, pictured above, which failed to take flight back in 2011.
As well as tablets, HTC has its sights set on your wrist. Responding in the same interview to the current craze for smart watches, HTC CEO Peter Chou says wearable technology is “a critical segment for us.”
“People laughed at us when we came out with the first smartphone… Now everyone has a smartphone. I’m pretty sure wearables will be the same.”
However, a wrist-worn HTC could be a way off: Chou cautions “It’s still too early”, planning to stay away from creating a device that’s “a gimmick or concept… not for people’s day-to-day lives.”
HTC had previously worked with Microsoft on a smart watch, but the project didn’t go anywhere.
The excellent HTC One has been joined by the HTC One Mini and One Max, but times are still hard for the Taiwanese company, which despite recruiting Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr, recently posted its first ever loss. Chou is unruffled, however, adding “HTC is a small company. For us to stay competitive and survive is not a huge problem.”
