Samsung has said that it will confirm its rollout plans for the latest version of Android “in due course”.
When asked about its plans to get the brand-new Android 4.4 KitKat onto popular mobiles such as the Galaxy S4 and Note 3, a Samsung spokesperson told CNET UK, “Samsung UK will announce rollout plans for Android 4.4 in due course.”
Short and sweet, eh? The statement doesn’t imply we’ll be seeing KitKat on Galaxy mobiles in the immediate future, but suggests we don’t have long to wait before we learn a little more.
Owners of Samsung smart phones will be staring enviously at the new Nexus 5, which is the first phone to rock the very latest edition of Google’s Android software. With any luck, Samsung will shortly let us know which phones are to be bestowed with KitKat, and a timeframe for the update, too.
Google claims it’s made KitKat less memory intensive than previous versions, which means it should work on a broad range of phones. Google says a phone with as little as 512MB of RAM should run the new software without breaking a sweat.
Fingers crossed that means an update for lots of Samsung’s smart phones and tablets, and not just high-flying recent additions like the S4 and Note 3.
Google says KitKat will be on Nexus devices including the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 “in the coming weeks”. A spokesperson for HTC, meanwhile, has told CNET UK that Android 4.4 with Sense 5.5 will arrive on the HTC One within 90 days in North America, with the One Max and One Mini to follow. Samsung, consider the gauntlet thrown down!
