The Moto X is attractively priced at $299, and can be had without signing any contracts. Try to buy the smartphone directly from Motorola in the same unlocked manner and you’ll spend double that amount. Republic Wireless is able to get the price down to that point because it is willing to partially subsidize the phone, banking that its customers will remain loyal and stay with the service provider.

The Moto X can be paired with a number of Republic Wireless’ rate plans which range from $5 to $40 per month. How is the carrier able to get away with such low rate plans? It comes down to the software tucked inside the device.

The Moto X is designed to use Wi-Fi networks for voice calls, text, and data first and then fall back onto Sprint’s network. The rub here is that you won’t be able to take this particular model to any other carriers down the road, even Sprint.

In his review of the Republic Wireless version of the Moto X, CNET’s Rick Broida had plenty of praise, adding that no other carriers are able to match the “bang for the buck.”
