Huawei’s Ascend Mate was one of the bigger blowers we saw last year, clocking in at a whopping 6.1-inches large. Now its successor has leaked, and fans of mega phones won’t be disappointed — it’s huge.
Well, it’s rumoured to be, anyway. The specs we do have are all conjecture at the moment, so take them with a pinch of salt. The snaps — which leaked on Chinese microblogging site Weibo, and were spotted by G for Games — don’t reveal all that much either.
They do show the Mate 2 with a fancy new brushed metal case though. This should help it look more ‘premium’ (i.e. expensive) than the original Mate.
The Ascend Mate 2 is rumoured to have the same 6.1-inch screen size as its predecessor, with either the same 720p resolution, or a slight bump to 1080p. It’s also said to sport the same 1.5GHz quad-core processor, with the same 2GB of RAM inside.
So, very much an incremental update then.
It’s rumoured that the Mate 2 will have better cameras, though. It’s said to have a 13-megapixel snapper on the back, compared to its predecessor’s 8-megapixel effort. The 5-megapixel front-facer should also be better than the original Mate’s 1-megapixel jobby.
The Mate 2 looks a bit of a letdown when it comes to the software side of things. It’s said to run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, which is positively ancient compared to the two-month-old Android 4.4 KitKat. Let’s hope Huawei fixes that before launch. I for one would be mighty peeved if I shelled out more than £300 for a new handset that wasn’t running the latest OS.
If these pics and specs are on the money, it looks like Huawei has focussed more on the Mate 2’s looks than its performance. Are you looking forward to the Mate 2? Is 6 inches too big for a phone? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook page.
