HTC One Max joins the phablet fray

Verizon on Thursday quietly announced that the HTC One Max has joined its smartphone roster.

Priced at a whopping $299 with a two-year service agreement, the equally-whopping 5.9-inch HTC One Max is a bigger version of the 2013 flagship device, the HTC One, but with the addition of microSD storage and a fingerprint scanner on the back.

Verizon, for its part, deserves a bit of credit for not sitting on the sidelines while other carriers offer the smartphone. This past summer saw Verizon waiting some six months before bringing the HTC One to its network.

It’s interesting to me that Verizon didn’t make much noise around this particular model, having only mentioned its arrival on a blog post. Typically, we might expect a press release or some social media coverage for a high-profile device. As it stands now, neither their Twitter or Facebook accounts make reference to the new handset.

The HTC One Max is available online and in retail stores and can be purchased for $25.22 on Verizon’s Edge plan. While the contract price is double what Sprint is asking, the off-contract $599 sticker is the same. To be fair, Sprint is currently shaving $100 off all smartphones when customers port their phone number from another carrier.
