BARCELONA — Smarter smartphone camera technologies are leaving the labs and headed into your future phone.
Mobile World Congress, the largest mobile-dedicated show in the world, was home to three notable technologies that are pushing the field of smartphone photography forward.
Pinhead-size modules
Can you imagine a high-megapixel camera the size of a pinhead? Rambus demoed the technology at MWC, which has no lens to speak of and no moving parts. What’s the benefit? Adding micro cameras to smartphones and other tiny wearable devices frees up space, and also enables the application of cameras where they’ve never gone before.

Next-gen HDR
High-dynamic range, better known on your camera’s selection screen as HDR, is already a favorite for boosting contrast and amping up image color, especially for landscapes and still life photos.
In addition to making camera modules smaller, Rambus is working on a technology called Binary Pixel, which will create high-dynamic images that eek out greater color and details when compared to smartphone photos that also use HDR.
Even more megapixels
Nokia is on the forefront of pushing camera with more smartphone megapixels. We saw the 41-megapixel Nokia 808 Pureview several years back. Now we saw an 82-megapixel lens…
