Jamo is a Wii-style dance game that uses your iPhone as the controller.
Of course, as everyone famously knows, it’s all too easy for a handheld controller to get a little, er, out of hand.
That’s why developer Vimo Labs has put together this special offer, exclusively for CNET readers: You can get a free iPhone 5 wrist-strap case when you try Jamo. Normally it would run you $10 plus shipping, but here you’re getting it delivered to your door without spending a penny.
The case offers plastic protection for your phone and the added benefit of a wrist strap, so just in case it flies from your hand while you’re shaking your moneymaker, it won’t go crashing to the floor or, worse, through the TV. It’s available in your choice of six colors.
To get it, install Jamo on your iPhone, then create an account via Facebook or e-mail. Next, head to the giveaway page, scroll down, and sign in the same way. Choose a color, supply your address, and you’re done. (If you’d rather not create an account, you can skip it; the app will supply a “token” you can enter in lieu of your e-mail address and password. So other than providing a physical address, this is a pretty no-strings-attached freebie.)
As for the game, dance videos from the app get beamed to your TV courtesy of an Apple TV or Google Chromecast. (You can also pair your iPhone with your PC, an admirably simple process.) Like similar dance games, your goal is to mirror your movements to what you see onscreen. And you’ll see updates as you dance, like “Perfect!” when you bust a move just right.
Jamo comes with a couple dozen free videos, everything from “Gangnam Style” to Bruno Mars’ “Treasure” to various Bollywood tunes. Other routines are available via in-app purchase for 99 cents or $1.99.
Interestingly, although you can play Jamo by yourself, the app includes various multiplayer options, including an in-person party mode (which supports unlimited linked iPhones) and online play against random opponents or Facebook friends. You can even use the app to capture your own dance routines and share them with others.
For anyone who loves to dance or wants to get more exercise, Jamo offers a fun, inexpensive experience. Though you may want to wait for your free case to arrive, as the experience will turn very pricey if your phone goes flying.
