After starting life as an informal film festival that gathered screen buffs in Sydney’s Tropicana Cafe, Tropfest has grown into a global sensation as the world’s largest short film festival. Now Tropfest is reinventing itself for the Twitter generation, launching a competition to find the world’s best Vine video.
Billed by Tropfest as “the ultimate challenge for short filmmakers”, Tropvine is open to anyone across the globe who submits an original six-second Vine video featuring a mirror, the festival’s ‘signature item’ this year. Entrants need to simply tweet the Video to @Tropfest with the hashtags #tropvine and #mirror.
A public vote will determine a shortlist of the top 20 videos, and Tropfest’s Jury will select the winner to be aired at the open-air Tropfest Australia 2014 film night in December 2014. The winner will also pick up two flights to Sydney, accommodation, VIP tickets to the festival, Nikon camera gear and a lunch with Twitter Australia.
The festival is now a major event in Australian attracting a high calibre of guests, with past judges including Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Samuel L Jackson. The competition has also expanded internationally to include festivals in North America, South East Asia and the Middle East.
