Pioneer Kuro not returning to Australia

Pioneer Australia has announced that it will not be re-entering the television market and that the new line of Elite-branded panels announced for the US will not be available in Australia.

“Audio is the company’s forte and we have no plans to re-enter the flat panel market in Australia,” said Chris Kotis, general manager of sales and marketing at Pioneer Australia.

Sharp has announced plans to license the “Elite” brand from Pioneer — though not the Kuro name — for use with its new line of LCD displays.

The Elite brand was associated with the Kuro line in the US and is also used for Pioneer’s high-end home cinema equipment, but is not used in Australia.

Pioneer was on the verge of launching Sharp LCDs under the Kuro brand (pictured above) in late 2008, but then halted production of Kuro in 2009.
