iPlayer Android app now on Jelly Bean, smashes records

iPlayer now works on Jelly Bean devices — as the BBC service smashes records for online watching and listening, with 2.5 million people feasting their eyes and ears on 199 million TV and radio programmes.

Version 1.4 of the BBC iPlayer Android App is now available in the Google Play app market, with improved video and audio playback. And it works on Jelly Bean phones and tablets just in time for the Samsung Galaxy S3‘s imminent Jelly Bean update

iPlayer iStats for September hit a record high in terms of viewers, total programmes requested, and average daily requests, which reached a record 6 million programmes per day. The return of Doctor Who topped the list of shows with 2.2 million viewings of the opening episode.

All five timey-wimey installments of series 7 so far materialise in the top 10 of programmes requested. Sitcoms Bad Education and Citizen Khan did boffo business in the new autumn schedules, while the latest runs of Strictly Come Dancing, Dragons’ Den and The Thick of It also pulled more than 600,000 viewers each.

As ever, the amount of viewing and listening on phones and tablets grew, accounting for over a fifth of requests.

Radio is up by 8 per cent on August, as 427,000 listeners tune in to say goodbye to departing Radio 1 breakfast show host Chris Moyles — more than four times the number tuning in for his successor Nick Grimshaw. Smart TV apps and games consoles also grew.

Interestingly, the gender split of viewers is exactly equal, while almost a quarter of viewers are over the age of 55.
