LG BH9420PW has 3D Sound Zooming to drop you in the action

While 3D might be struggling to win the nation’s favour, here’s a cool feature that will help make for a more immersive experience. LG is due to announce a new surround sound system at CES, and it comes packing a feature called 3D Sound Zooming.

Now this is rather clever. It syncs sound with the location and movement of the 3D images on an LG 3D TV. So if something appears to come out of the screen, the sound will match it, and the same if something shoots off into the distance. Sounds great, and it should make for more immersive viewing.

The technology is LG’s own. It features on its snappily-named BH9420PW surround sound system and works by using an algorithm to analyse the depth of certain objects in the picture.

Did we mention it’s a 9.1 surround sound system? That’s right, 9.1. You get the normal 5.1 surround system plus four upright 3D speakers. These pump sound upward, making sure your room is completely filled with sound. A 360-degree reflector inside each of the upright 3D speakers reflects sound in all directions, ensuring the acoustics are up to scratch. LG claims it’ll be like sitting in a concert hall, though we’ll have to wait for a full test — or at least an ears-on — before we give our verdict.

The sweet spot should also be larger than normal surround systems, thanks to the upright 3D speakers, so you won’t have to fight over the one chair that’s in the best position.

That all sounds mighty impressive. LG has also announced a 55-inch OLED TV, new 3D glasses and an 84-inch ‘ultra definition’ 4K set for CES. The press conference kicks off on Monday, so look out for more news then.
