New Apple TV due alongside new iPads, listing hints

A refreshed version of Apple TV could be with us within the week, Amazon’s European listings suggest.

AppleInsider spied that Apple TV has been yanked from sale on Amazon’s French and German websites, both of which say that the set-top box will be back in stock on 23 October.

That’s the day after Apple’s confirmed 22 October event, where we’ll almost certainly see a brand new iPad and iPad mini revealed.

Update: Both Amazon France and Germany have now changed their listings. Amazon France says the box in back in stock but delivery could take two months, while Amazon Germany is simply selling Apple TV as normal. Meanwhile a fresh report on the subject says we may not see a new Apple TV anytime soon. The rest of the original story follows.

The date could be a coincidence of course — perhaps Amazon has simply run out of stock — but it’s been a while since we’ve seen any significant changes come to Apple TV, and Apple does have form when it comes to announcing something, then putting it on sale the very next day.

The last version of Apple TV was announced in January, but was a minor revision that tweaked the processor and software. Today Apple TV competes with streaming services like Netflix and Lovefilm, which are available via many devices and smart TVs.

Apple’s event on Tuesday is shaping up to be an exciting one. Hot on the heels of last month’s iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, we’re expecting to see a new iPad with a fingerprint scanner and — fingers crossed — a Retina display iPad mini.

We’ll also hear more about Mavericks, the next version of Apple’s OS X Mac operating system.
