Over in Serbia, a group of computer science students have hacked a digital billboard in Belgrade’s popular Republic Square, displaying The Pirate Bay logo, along with a Ghandi quote.
The students have apparently made of hobby of this practice. They find security weaknesses in businesses, exploiting them in fairly harmless ways, and then informing the business about how the hacks were made, letting them fix the issues.
The group told TorrentFreak that they’d decided to give Pirate Bay some free publicity on the sign because:
We strongly believe in the right of free speech and are against any form of censorship. The Pirate Bay is the closest we have to a free, apolitical independent worldwide organization that supports these values, and we simply felt the need to support it in some way.
The students insist that no damage was done during the hack, and that the company that owns the billboard is now fully aware of its security issues.
In addition to the Pirate Bay logo, a video posted to YouTube by the students shows one of their numbers (wearing a “Keep Calm and Seed” shirt) using his phone to play Space Invaders on the billboard, as well as displaying a “hacking4fun” banner.
It seems that The Pirate Bay noticed the hack and enjoyed it. It posted an image of the billboard to its Facebook page with the caption: “Come on fellow pirates! Onward to victory!”
