Manufacturing large-sized OLED panels for TVs has proven to be a tricky proposition for most electronics manufacturers.
Indeed, it was this manufacturing difficulty that contributed to the extensive delays in bringing OLED TVs to market, along with the premium price tag on the two models available in Australia.
Just ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, LG has announced it will ramp up OLED production in 2014, thanks to “engineering improvements” in the manufacturing process.
This improvement comes with a reduced price for the 55-inch curved OLED TV currently available in Australia. Its initial price tag when we reviewed it was AU$11,999. The Harvey Norman website now lists it as AU$7999 — that’s a rather impressive saving of AU$4000.
In a press statement, Lambro Skropidis, General Manager Marketing at LG Australia said:
Very few companies have been able to master the manufacture of OLED TV technology, and we’re incredibly excited that not only have we been able to innovate and lead in this new segment, but we’ve worked out how to produce at high volumes. This is a powerful breakthrough that consolidates LG’s position as one of the world’s leading consumer electronics companies.
LG is expected to show off a range of OLED TVs at CES, including the previous seen 77-inch curved TV with Ultra HD resolution and the flat-panel “gallery” OLED.
