Sky is said to be plotting a major revamp to its broadcast service, that could see Ultra HD set-top boxes landing in UK living rooms within the next few years.

The possible addition of 4K technology is just one aspect of a planned overhaul to Sky’s service, “The Sunday Telegraph reports“, citing unnamed sources. Sky is also said to have established a special unit dubbed ‘Project Ethan’, that is working on a new system that could let you access your recordings from your smartphone or tablet.

Under the rumoured scheme, your recordings would be stored online, and could be streamed to different devices. You could start recorded or on-demand video on one gadget, then resume playback on another. The report says the system could roll out to Sky’s customers in two years’ time.

Sky recently launched its ‘Buy & Keep’ service, which lets you purchase films from Sky’s library of flicks. As well as getting an HD digital version to watch straight away, Sky will post you a DVD copy too.

“Innovation is at the heart of our business”, Sky said in a comment sent to CNET. “We are always looking at ways to enhance our service to customers, as with the launch of our new EPG home page this month.”

John Lewis’ WebOS TV incoming

Meanwhile, in other UK-centric telly tech news, retailer John Lewis is said to be poised to release an own-brand TV, built in partnership with LG and featuring WebOS. Pocket-Lint has a photo of the John Lewis catalogue that suggests as much, and I’ve contacted the retailer asking for confirmation. We got a glimpse of LG’s WebOS smart TV tech earlier in the year, and were impressed with the simplicity of its interface.

Would you buy a WebOS TV, and what do you think of Sky’s rumoured plans? Let me know in the comments.
