LAS VEGAS — There’s no denying that wireless multiroom speaker systems are popular, but the cost can get prohibitively high. Bluetooth accessory maker SuperTooth says that doesn’t have to be the case.
Unveiled at CES 2015, the Multiroom System (yes, that’s the name) consists of one base speaker and up to four satellite speakers, priced from $300 for three speakers or $480 for a five-speaker set. Australia and UK pricing wasn’t available, but the converted prices for three speakers are £200 or AU$375, and £315 or AU$595 for the five-speaker set.
You connect to the base via Bluetooth and then the base connects to your additional speakers using a “proprietary RF wireless technology.” SuperTooth says the signal from the base to the satellites can reach up to about 50 feet (15 meters). Your connection to the base is limited by Bluetooth’s range of about 30 feet (10 meters).
But because it’s Bluetooth you can play any source you want since it’s not dependent on a service or an app. If you don’t want to stream, there’s a 3.5mm input on the top of the base speaker.
There is an app, but it’s just for controlling the speaker volume and setup. The speakers can be used in mono or stereo modes. This basically allows you to either control the volume for each speaker individually or two, three, four or all at once.
SuperTooth says you can look for the Multiroom System to be available in the second quarter of 2015.
