If 2014 was the year that “ultra HD” 4K gained ground, then this is the year that will test whether it truly takes over— and Panasonic is banking on having something to show for when 1080p finally gets bumped.
At the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, the Japanese electronics giant will be peddling both new products and the promise of a future where 4K is commonplace not just in television sets, but in every form of video recording gadget out there. That includes camcorders and digital cameras, which Panasonic will show off front and center at the expo with new models, with attention focused on its 4K-capable Lumix line.
However, all eyes will be on what Panasonic brings to the table in the 4K television department to compete with Samsung and LG. Last year was the company’s first post-plasma CES after it announced in October 2013 that it would discontinue sales of plasma TV products in 2014, effectively signaling the death of superior plasma-quality picture. This year we’ll look for what Panasonic delivers with OLED sets and its experiments with newer, Quantum Dot technology — and whether it can wow crowds with concept products like curved and bendable displays.
