On Thursday Apple released an update to iTunes, bringing the version number to 12.1. In addition to improving sync performance with iOS devices, the update also introduces an official widget for iTunes for OS X Yosemite users.

You can download the update by launching the Mac App Store and selecting the “Updates” icon.

Adding the widget is simple:

  • Open Notification Center.
  • Click on the Edit button.
  • Click on the “+” icon next to iTunes.

The widget is very basic, providing only playback control buttons and nothing more. You can’t search for music or select a different playlist from it, though both features would be welcomed.

iTunes control from Notification Center seems to be a hot topic this week, with CNET’s Matt Elliot having just covered how to control music playback on your Mac using a widget on your iOS device.
