With Presto TV already up and running, Australians are getting another streaming video option this month, with Stan beginning operations from January 26 — Australia Day.
Stan is the TV and movie video on demand service from Nine Entertainment and Fairfax. Announced back in August 2014 as StreamCo, the joint venture was rebranded as Stan in November last year. It is one of three new streaming services launching in the first quarter of 2015, with Foxtel’s Presto TV already running and popular US service Netflix expected in March.
Stan offers unlimited streaming for AU$10 a month and already boasts an extensive catalogue of both TV series and movies. Shows include “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle” — both of which are being touted as “First on Stan” — alongside better-known shows such as “Community”, “Will and Grace”, “Fargo” and more. “Breaking Bad” spin-off “Better Call Saul” will be a Stan streaming exclusive, with the show available on the service from February 9.
Two episodes of “Transparent”, a drama-comedy from Amazon Studios starring “Arrested Development’s” Jeffrey Tambor, will air on the Nine Network on January 27 aimed at promoting both the show and the Stan service.
Movie-wise, Stan is touting its James Bond collection — all 24 of 007’s cinematic appearances, as well as dedicated Australian section with titles like “Wake in Fright”, “Kenny”, “Romper Stomper” and “Young Einstein”.
Stan has apps for Android and iOS and is Chromecast and Airplay ready, with HD streaming available for some shows.
