Verizon has made some changes in its upper ranks.

The nation’s largest wireless service provider said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday that it had named John Stratton executive vice president and president of operations, responsible for both the wireless and wireline business.
Stratton replaces Daniel Mead, who was serving as CEO of Verizon Wireless and is preparing to retire. The wireless business had its own CEO because Verizon Wireless was previously a joint venture between Verizon and Vodafone before Verizon assumed full control last year.
The changes mark just the latest management shuffle in the wireless industry, underscoring the rapidly changing nature of the business. Last year, Sprint named telecom industry outsider Marcelo Claure as CEO to turn its business around, while AT&T promoted Glenn Lurie to be the CEO of its mobility business.
Stratton, 53, previously served as the head of its global enterprise and wireline business. He will still report to Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam.
Mead, 61, has moved to a role where he will oversee the transfer of the company’s wireline assets in California, Florida and Texas to Frontier Communications as part of their $10.54 billion deal. Once the transaction is completed, he is expected to retire.
A Verizon Wireless spokeswoman declined to comment further.
