Foil your cat’s bathroom attacks with 3D

There’s a war going on in your home. Your cat sleeps 23 hours out of the day and then spends the remaining hour shredding your toilet paper until your bathroom looks like an origami crime scene.

If you have a 3D printer, though, you can put an end to this little, furry reign of toilet terror.

Johnny Lawrence, an engineer with GE Aviation, shared a clever toilet-paper guard on Thingiverse, a site full of user-submitted designs for 3D printing. The Kitten Proof Toilet Paper Guard can be printed out in four separate pieces that work together to provide a cover for your toilet-paper roll. A sliding door lets you access the contents while ruining your cat’s attempts to lay claws on it.

The inspiration for the design came thanks to the antics of Mochi, a 6-month-old kitten with a penchant for making a huge papery mess on the bathroom floor. Clearly Lawrence isn’t the only person with a problem cat. Thingiverse users have already downloaded the design files 37 times.

Cats are clever. Has Mochi managed to defeat the safety system? Not yet. Lawrence reports that “it seems to have worked so far.” He also posted a video on October 25 showing how to assemble the guard.

Many an animal has benefited from the use of 3D printers. An amputee goose got a new leg, an injured toucan received a beak repair and and a dog with deformed front legs got a set of prosthetics, all thanks to the power of 3D printing. Mochi, however, probably isn’t thrilled about having a favorite toy taken out of commission.
