Steven Soderbergh has been doing a lot of experiments with films and content lately. Fresh off the heels of his 7-hour interactive thriller “Mosaic,” he releases a trailer for his new film “Unsane.” Whereas “Mosaic” was created to be watched on an iPhone, “Uncrate” is notable for being filmed with one.

“Anybody going to see this movie who has no idea of the backstory to the production will have no idea this was shot on the phone,” said Soderbergh during an interview with IndieWire at the 2018 Sundance film festival. “That’s not part of the conceit.”

This isn’t the first film to be filmed with an iPhone. The indie film “Tangerine” was shot on iPhones
due to budget constraints and Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine”) filmed the short “Detour” for Apple on iPhones last year.

“Unsane” stars Claire Foy (“The Crown”), Jay Pharoah (“Saturday Night Live”), Juno Temple (“Atonement”) and Amy Irving (“Carrie” and “Traffic”). A woman played by Foy is involuntarily committed to a mental institution after trying to get away from a stalker. The tagline for the film is: “Is she… or isn’t she?” implying that her fears may just be a delusion.

Soderbergh reassured that the psychological thriller holds up to being projected 40 feet high and described the image as looking “like velvet.” He said that filming with a phone is “the future.”

“There’s a philosophical obstacle a lot of people have about the size of the capture device. I don’t have that problem,” said Soderbergh. “I look at this as potentially one of the most liberating experiences that I’ve ever had as a filmmaker, and that I continue having.”

“Unsane” will premiere at the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival in February before it is released in theaters on March 23, 2018.

Now you don’t have to give up the convenience of your iPhone to produce more sophisticated Facebook Live video. An update to the DxO One‘s app in early 2017 will let that add-on camera for the iPhone support live-streaming to Facebook.

The One has a 1-inch imaging sensor, much bigger than that in the iPhone, which helps it deliver better photo and video quality. But its biggest trick here is the new multicamera-switching capability, plus the ability to use all three available cameras at once: the iPhone’s front and back in addition to the One. You’ll be able to monitor the streams and switch cameras with a touch. You also have the choice of which microphone to use.

Combined with the Wi-Fi remote capabilities added in the summer and the ability to operate while charging, it seems to be a pretty compact live-streaming solution. And it theoretically will work with models back through to the iPhone 5.

Good Design Awards/BACtrack

Run by Good Design Australia, the Good Design Awards track the best design and innovation of the year across a range of fields, including sporting goods, automotive design, domestic appliances and commercial products.

A dedicated Consumer Electronics category included a broad range of product finalists, including the Jump Charging Cable, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and even a Braun shaver. However, the BACtrack Mobile Breathalyzer was awarded the Best in Category.

Designed in San Francisco, the BACtrack connects wirelessly to a smartphone via Bluetooth and uses “police-grade Xtend Fuel Cell Sensor Technology to offer the highest level of accuracy and consistency” when measuring Blood Alcohol Content, according to the creators.

The device is compatible with both iOS and Android through a free app, which can save and share results and estimate when the user’s BAC will return to 0.00 per cent.

Speaking about the BACtrack, the Design Award judges said it was “beautifully and smartly designed” while also being functional.

“This is a clever little piece of technology that works well,” the judges said. “Accuracy, functionality and user interface considerations are paramount in a product such as this and the designers have delivered on all fronts.

“The product works seamlessly across a Bluetooth interface and is very intuitive to use. This technology offers users an important service that will have a positive impact on reducing the number of drink driving incidents on our roads.”

The Good Design Awards have recognised some big names in the past, both from the design world and beyond. After director James Cameron accepted the top award across all categories last year for the Deep Sea Challenger submersible, this year’s top prize went to a collection of bathroom products designed by Marc Newson.

Pebble

The concept of Pebble’s “smart watch” is simple — a clean interface running useful apps and wrapped in a fashionable watch interface. The key to Pebble’s inevitable success will be its apps.

According to its Kickstarter page, the Pebble E-Paper Watch will ship with the capability to run several apps using some of the functionality of your iPhone or Android smartphone via Bluetooth connection.

For example, bikers can get information about their speed, distance, and total time by using the GPS capabilities of their connected smartphone. Runners will also get a similar functionality.

Pebble’s watch will also allow users to control their music, view notifications like text messages, e-mails, Facebook and Twitter messages, and caller ID, and get golf rangefinder information on more than 25,000 courses worldwide, thanks to a partnership with FreeCaddie.

With Pebble’s overwhelming success on Kickstarter, customers can expect more apps to be created by developers looking to add their services to this new device. The video below shows the Pebble E-Paper Watch in action:

In addition to the apps, the Pebble E-Paper Watch has several customizable watch faces that users can choose from by using Pebble’s iPhone or Android app. Currently the watches come in three colors: Arctic White, Jet Black, and Cherry Red.

Reading through Pebble’s FAQ, its watch batteries (which are rechargeable via USB) are tested to last approximately 7 days. The watch lens is scratch- and shatter-proof and coated with an antiglare optical coating. You’ll want to keep in mind that most of the apps use your smartphone’s Bluetooth connection and access GPS data. This can decrease your daily battery life expectancy if your phone’s Bluetooth is turned on all day.

At time of writing, the Kickstarter project has received nearly $300,000 in funding from more than 2,200 backers. You can preorder a Jet Black watch for $115 or an Arctic White or Cherry Red watch for $125 on Pebble’s project page.
