50 Rescuers, One Crane: What It Took French Rescuers To Help Obese Man Stuck At Home Since 2019

French rescuers needed extreme measures to evacuate a man with morbid obesity from his flat after he could not move inside his house due to an accident in 2019, as per a report in Reuters.

Around 50 rescuers and a crane got involved in the operation. With an estimated weight between 250 and 300 kilos, “Alain P.” could not move after he fell off his bed a year back.

Now he will be in the hospital for months and doctors shall take care of him and attempt to help him shed some of that body fat.

He was eventually lifted in a large container. This was after workers demolished the facade in order to have access. An inflatable cushion was used to lift the patient.

The first attempt to evacuate him in December 2019 was not a success after he said no as he was scared he would lose his flat.

Mustapha Sebanne is the head doctor at Montpellier’s emergency services. He said rescuers had coached him in order to be of help.

“He’s scared of this extraction. We understand, and now we’ve worked with him to get him in the right frame of mind, there’s a form of trust between us,” he said.
